What is Radiology?

Radiology is a medical specially which involves the use of various imaging modalities in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

These modalities include – Plain X-rays, Fluoroscopy, Computed Tomography (CT) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Ultrasound, Nuclear Imaging.

Who is The Radiologist?

The radiologist is a doctor who has spent an additional four (4) years of training in the use and interpretation of the different diagnostic imaging modalities.

Who are the other members of the Radiology team?

  1. Radiographer – Technologist who is trained in the safe operation of the various equipment used in the radiology Department.
  2. Dark Room Technologists – Trained in image processing
  3. Nurses.

There are twenty one (21) Radiology Department across the island.

In the public sector the University Hospital Radiology Department offers the widest range of diagnostic and treatment procedures.
These include:  Plain X-rays
 
                         
Computed Tomography (CT)
                          Flouroscopy (Barium Meals, Enemas, HSGs,
                          IVPs, Venogram, Angiography ect)
                          Mammography
                          Ultrasound.

The adjacent Nuclear Medicine Department offers a wide range of Nuclear Diagnostic Procedures as well as treatment for thyroid disease.

The KPH is the next best equipped Centre.  However, it does not offer CT, Mammography or Nuclear Medicine.

The KPH however has the only radio-therapy unit (for the treatment of cancers).

The other hospitals offer more limited service which usually include plain X-rays, Fluoroscopy +/- Ultrasound.
